The Communication Program of the Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion invites applications for a Lecturer in Strategic Communication, beginning in July 2023. The ideal candidate would have a combination of academic and practical experience in the discipline, with skill sets encompassing advertising, sales, marketing, and public relations. Experience that reflects a commitment to inclusivity and supporting traditionally marginalized communities would be considered an asset.  

 

The lecturer position would feature a 4/4 teaching load, including classes such as (but not limited to)

Introduction to Strategic Communication, Strategic Communication Writing, Public Relations and Crisis Communication and other professionally focused course offerings. Expertise in instruction and practice with video, graphics, social and other multimedia competencies will be given significant consideration. Candidates should articulate their commitment to teaching in a diverse student and campus population and the ways in which they center inclusive teaching and learning practices in face-to-face and online environments. The position will serve departmental and programmatic initiatives such as promotion of internships, advanced strategic communication agency-type work, and service learning, among others.  

 

The position will also include a lead advising role with the department’s strategic communication student organization, ODU PRSSA 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s or doctoral degree in Communications or a related field
  2. Ability to teach in two or more of these course areas: strategic communication writing; strategic communication tactics; multimedia strategic communication; social media for organizations; crisis and communication
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  4. Professional experience in strategic communication, public relations, or a related field; and
  5. Demonstrated commitment to mentoring non-traditional students and teaching at a minority-serving institution.

 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience teaching in both face-to-face and online formats
  • Proficiency with industry standard software, desktop editing and graphic design Experience mentoring student groups
  • Candidates with experience teaching at the post-secondary level and, especially, experience working professionally in public relations, integrated marketing communications, or advertising strongly preferred.
