The Director of Development & Marketing is responsible for the strategic direction of the departments and the key relationships which drive resource generation and branding for the organization while ensuring alignment with the AFP Code of Ethical Standards and authenticity in communications.
The director is responsible for the planning, implementation, management, and oversight of all fund development, donor relations, site rentals, membership program and resource development initiatives to ensure revenue goals are met or exceeded. The director also oversees all marketing initiatives supporting the museum’s mission and strategic priorities while effectively promoting the services and products of the Thinkery.
Fundraising operations include: prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship strategies, and volunteer relations.
Marketing operations include: marketing, communications, graphic design, and digital media.
Membership operations include: Renewal, acquisition, special events, and Member Morning.
Develop and implement a comprehensive annual resource development and marketing plan. This plan addresses the renewal, retention and acquisition of donors through planned fundraising strategies which include: exhibit sponsorships, gifts, grants, and planned gifts. This plan addresses branding and communications strategies and marketing initiatives which elevate the brand, drive the resources engine and promote the mission and vision of the Thinkery.
Manage an active donor portfolio of major gift donors and prospects. Utilize moves management strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts from individual, corporate and foundations.
Work with the CEO and the resource development committee to plan, execute, and facilitate fundraising strategies that relate to the annual development plan and organizational strategic plan.
Work with the marketing and development teams to establish and implement an annual calendar of fundraising and communication activities to include cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities, special events, direct mail, e-communications, newsletters, PR campaign, and digital media campaigns to meet annual budget requirements, expectations and goals.
Oversee funding proposals, annual fund materials, direct mail letters, special event materials, and other fundraising support documentation.
Oversee Membership programs including materials, renewal series, upgrade campaign, acquisition campaign, special events, and vendor relations.
Oversee the stewardship, gift accounting and reporting functions, ensuring all donors receive personal and timely acknowledgment of gifts.
Oversee newsletters, program descriptions, web and social media copy and other marketing materials.
Incorporate development policies and procedures, mission and vision into all development plans and volunteer committees.
Participate in the Thinkery leadership team – provide advice, counsel and assistance in museum-wide operations; assert leadership in representing museum programs and priorities to staff and external stakeholders; carry out management team responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
Supervise and guide staff toward the achievement of museum goals and to high levels of performance; select, manage, develop and evaluate staff, either directly or indirectly, to effectively meet established goals.
Guide and monitor the allocation of resources and expenditures to ensure efficiency, strategic alignment and budgetary compliance. Oversee development and marketing annual budgets.

7 years experience in professional fundraising
Personal major gift cultivation and solicitation experience
Excellent verbal, visual and written communication skills
Ability to work with and motivate a broad spectrum of people including board members, major donors, volunteers, community members and staff
A working knowledge of the psychology, principles, and techniques of major gift solicitation
Extensive experience with major marketing campaigns (print and digital)
Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge fundraising software
A., B.S. or equivalent degree
Schedule and availability reflects that the organization is a 7-day-a-week operation. Often duties occur outside of/in excess of regular work week schedule.
Coordinates with other members of the leadership team to ensure direct service staff has support during all operational hours.
Adhere to the AFP International Code of Ethical Standards for fundraising.
Assists in engaging and sustaining volunteers through introduction, information sharing and oversight (when applicable). Proactively provide support ensuring each volunteer has a productive, safe and meaningful experience.
Periodic support and programmatic duties in other museum areas.
Professional attendance at museum functions and special events.
